How To fix Windows Update error 8007005 in Windows 7, 8.x and 10

Windows Update error code 8007005 is associated with permission problems in downloading and installing updates. This usually happens when user try to do Windows update from an account which do not have the admin rights to install Windows. There are also other scenarios which can cause the error message.

The error message may look like:
– Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.
– Some updated were not installed. Failed: 84 updates KB2761451, KB2727528, KB2729452 , KB2761226
Error(s) found: Code 8007005 Windows update encountered an unknown error.

This solutions applies for following version of Microsoft Windows:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10

Below are the solutions to fix this error

Basic Steps

Step 1: Disable Proxy:

1. Hold Win Key + R and Type CMD
2. Hit Enter key

 netsh winhttp show proxy 

Check Proxy Setting

Note: You will need Administrator Access to Run the above command. Simply Right Click on cmd button and select “Run as Administrator

If you get the message “Direct Access (no proxy server)“, continue to the next step otherwise disable proxy from Network Settings.

Step 2: Verify Windows Firewall Settings :

1. In Start Search box type Firewall.cpl
Open Windows Firewall2. Click on Windows Firewall.
3. Click on “Turn Windows Firewall On or Off
Turn Windows Firewall on or off4. In Private network Setting, select “Turn off Windows firewall (not recommended)
5. Do the same for Public Network Setting.
Disable Windows Firewall6. Press OK.
Note: After the issue is resolved you must turn the Windows Firewall on.

In most cases Microsoft Windows update error 8007005 should be resolved by following above steps. If however the issue still persists it means there is some critical issue with your system which needs to be fixed manually.


Advanced Steps

If above steps didn’t solve your problem than you need to follow the below mentioned (advanced) steps.

Step 1: Log in as administrator to install updates

Make sure the account that you login to install updates have admin rights which include installing Windows update.

Step 2: Remove security softwares

Security software’s are known to create this problem. Once a security software is installed, it takes control of permission settings of certain file locations to protect the computer from malwares. In such cases, a corrupt security software can create problems by not allowing windows update to make changes.

You may uninstall security software from Programs and Features listed in Control Panel. But the most recommended method is to check the security software manufacturer site, search for uninstaller for the security software, download and run it to make sure that any traces of the software is removed.

Also, remove if you have any trial version or expired security software in your computer.

Note: Instead of uninstalling, you may also try disabling the security software and run windows update. But once the security software is corrupted beyond a certain limit, you have more chance of success by uninstalling the software than disabling it.

Step 3: Recreate Windows update service

This is to ensure flushing out possible downloaded corrupt files which might be hampering the download and installation of windows update files. Follow the method to recreate windows update service.

  • Press Windows Key + R to open Run Window
  • Type services.msc to open services windows
  • Right click on Windows Update. Click stop. This will stop the windows update service. Close Services window.
  • On the run window type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This open SoftwareDistribution window. Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to some other unique name
  • Open services.msc window again. Right click on Windows Update service and click Start.
  • Restart computer

After restarting the computer, try doing a windows update again. A new SoftwareDistribution folder will be created in place of old renamed SoftwareDistribution folder. If the problem was with Windows update service, this should fix the problem.

Step 4: Run SFC scan

SFC scan utility is used to check and fix system file corruption.

  • Right click and hold Start button
  • Select Command Prompt (admin)
  • Type the command sfc /scannow

The scan will try to automatically fix all system errors. Once the scan is complete, restart computer and try Windows update.

Step 5: Run an in-place upgrade

If none of the above steps worked, it might be because the operating system is too corrupted. The final solution is to do a repair installation or an in-place upgrade installation which is done to repair all corrupted files to default

Once the repair installation is done, try doing Windows update.
