In July 2015, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8, the thinnest smartphone it had ever released. Today, the new Galaxy A8 (2016) has been revealed, and it’s a bit chunkier than its predecessor – 7.2mm, compared with 5.9mm – but it’s still pretty sleek.

Indeed, the new model looks a great deal like the original model, and even includes its full-metal bodywork. The device sits towards the upper end of the mid-range as a premium offering, which includes Samsung’s ‘Grace’ user experience that originally appeared on its Galaxy Note7.

The Galaxy A8 also supports Samsung’s Always On Display feature, which can show useful info on the screen even when the display is switched ‘off’. The A8 supports Samsung Pay too, with a fingerprint sensor built into the home button.

The Galaxy A8’s key specs include:

  • 5.7-inch Super AMOLED with Full HD (1920x1080px) resolution
  • Octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support up to 256GB)
  • 16MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and 1080p video recording at 30fps
  • 8MP front-facing camera with 1080p video
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • NFC
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • 3300mAh battery
  • 156.6 x 76.8 x 7.2mm; 182g

Samsung will open pre-orders for the Galaxy A8 in its home market of South Korea on October 1, with the blue model shown here exclusively available on SK Telecom. The device will be priced at 649,000 KRW (around $590 USD).

The Galaxy A8 will ship with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow onboard, and it’s not yet clear when Samsung plans to upgrade it to Android 7.0 Nougat. Details of international availability and pricing have not been revealed yet either.
